I am looking forward to co-teaching the course of Christian Macketanz
Painting Tells Stories: Two Weeks in Salzburg’s Most Beautiful Studio
18.08. – 30.08.2025, Hohensalzburg Fortress
Pictures told – and still tell – stories by and about people, about our paths through life, our ideas, our origins and beliefs, and our view of the world. Ever since we have existed, we have told stories, often by painting them on walls.
As artists, we are always interested in the question of narrating. How, in times of moving pictures (in film, television and for the past 30 years also in new media), is it possible to represent a contemporary, authentic narrative in a painted picture? Can it still appeal to people and touch their hearts?
Over these two weeks, we will enter into the adventurous river of painting: one bank is shaped by the pictorial worlds of human existence and myths; the other is formed through our highly individual life-worlds and experiences.
In this course, we will discuss the question „What is narrative?“, and investigate our pictorial answers. We will concentrate on each individual participant, as well as holding group discussions on the works.
We will devote the first two days to the topic of colour, in order to develop a common understanding of how to talk about colour and colour relations (colour workshop with Katrina Pennington, https://katrinalpennington.com). Then we will conceptualise our life-worlds in painting.
Besides individual works, a large-format wall-painting will be created, designed by the entire class.
